What is GATE Exam?
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is an online national level examination conducted for Master of Engineering (ME), Masters in Technology (MTech) and direct PhD admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other institutes/universities across India. The exam is jointly conducted by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISC Bangalore), on a rotational basis on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB - GATE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India.
What’s new in GATE Exam 2022?
GATE 2022 information brochure has been released. The brochure comprises details regarding the newly introduced changes in the exam. Candidates can check the new things below:
- New Papers: Two new subjects have been introduced: Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (combined) and Geomatics Engineering. The total number of subjects increased to 29 for GATE 2022.
- More Centres: There is an increase in the number of GATE 2022 exam centres. The exam will be conducted at 221 centres across India. However, this is a tentative number, in case of any change, the same will be updated here.
- Relaxed Eligibility Criteria to be continued: GATE 2022 eligibility criteria will be the same as that of the last year which was relaxed from the minimum 10+2+4 (previous) to a minimum of 10+2+3 (ongoing). It enabled the students studying in the third year of their undergraduate course to appear for the entrance test. The GATE score is valid for the next three years from the date of the result declaration.
- Appear for more than one paper: In another change last year, students applying for GATE could opt for two subject papers from the prescribed set of combinations. Earlier, the candidates could apply to appear for only one subject. The same will be continued this year as well.
- All Test Papers of GATE 2022 will be objective type. The pattern of questions may include:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ),
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

GATE 2022 Result
The result was released on March 16, 2021, online on the official website. Candidates who appeared in the exam can check their results by logging into the portal. Only qualified candidates will be able to download the scorecard which will remain valid for three years from the date of GATE result 2022 declaration.
GATE 2021 Result: Steps to check

- Go to the results page and click on GATE Result
- GOAPS portal will appear, fill in the login details
- Click on the submit tab
- GOAPS candidate dashboard for GATE will open
- Click on the results section
- The GATE result will be displayed on the screen
GATE 2022 Counselling
The counselling will be conducted by COAP for admission to the MTech courses offered by IITs and CCMT for admission to MTech programmes offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs. Eligible candidates will be able to participate in the GATE 2022 counselling as per the schedule which is to be released soon. The counselling process incorporate various stages like registration, choice filling, choice locking, seat allotment, document verification, etc. After going through these stages successfully, candidates will get admission to an institute.
GATE Rank v/s Institute
The qualifying cut off for all the colleges may vary every year but it has been observed that the rank required for admissions to top colleges remains nearly the same. Some of the examples for the ranks which are accepted by institutes are mentioned below in the table:

GATE 2022 Application Form
The application form was released by the IIT Kharagpur on September 2, 2021. Eligible candidates were required to visit the official website to fill GATE 2022 Application Form through the GOAPS portal. Students can follow the steps below to register for exam:

GATE 2022 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates aspiring for GATE exam must meet all the eligibility conditions before filling the application form. Students can check the eligibility criteria below:
Educational Qualification: To apply for GATE 2022, candidates must possess either of the below-mentioned undergraduate degrees. Students who are studying in the third or final years of any undergraduate degree are also eligible to appear for the exam.
- BE/BTech
- BPharma
- BArch
- BSc (Research)/BS
- Professional Society Examination (equivalent to BE/BTech/BArch)
- MSc/MA/MCA or equivalent
- Integrated ME/MTech
- Integrated MSc/Integrated BS-MS
- Integrated ME/MTech or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2)
Pass Percentage: No minimum pass percentage criteria is defined as GATE 2022 eligibility.
Age Limit: There is no age limit defined to apply for the GATE exam.
Nationality: The candidate must be an Indian citizen.
GATE Eligibility Criteria for International Students: Candidates belonging to Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates are also eligible to apply for GATE 2022.
GATE 2022 Admission Process
The GATE admission process starts with the filling of the application form to the seat allotment after counselling. Candidates can check the GATE 2022 Admission process below:
- Filling GATE 2022 Application Form: The first step is to fill out the application form. Candidates who are aspiring for the exam, have to register themselves on the GOAPS website.
- Download GATE 2022 Admit Card: After registration, candidates are required to download their GATE admit card. Admit card release date is yet to be announced by the exam conducting authority.
- Appear for the GATE 2022 Exam: As per the subject chosen, candidates have to appear for the exam on the scheduled date.
- GATE 2022 Result Declaration: The exam conducting authority will announce the result in the third week of March. The result will comprise candidates' marks, normalised scores and rank.
- Participate in GATE 2022 Counselling Process: The counselling will be conducted for the GATE qualified candidates to choose the college and branch as per their rank and choice.
GATE 2022 Syllabus
IIT Kharagpur has released the GATE 2022 syllabus along with the information brochure. There has been no change in the syllabus. The exam syllabus varies from paper to paper selected by the candidates. However, the syllabus of the General Aptitude (GA) section will be the same for all 29 papers. The section of General Aptitude will hold 15% weightage, while 85% of marks would be given to the core subjects.

- Download and take multiple coloured printouts of the document
